A Completely Self-Indulgent Fashion Illustration

Sorry for no updates, but I've been soo busy with work. It's illustration work, but for a video game company, so of course none of it will see the light of day for months and months. Sigh. But I'm having tons of fun!

Going back to a genre that I never excelled in, here's a fashion illustration I did as part of Aimee Fleck's new zine all about fashion and superheroes. She asked everyone to choose a superhero to dress up, and so of course I chose six: those fabulous rainbow spandex teenagers, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. It was done very quickly, in part on the plane ride home for thanksgiving, so please forgive that I obviously spent no time on the couch, table or glasses, and that they look nothing like themselves. I...can do better. I swear. This was largely just self-indulgence.

They're at a masque of sorts, I think? Who was your favorite? I always loved Billy :3 The team is wearing Balenciaga (menswear spring 2012) and Givenchy (spring 2011 couture & menswear, spring 2012 RTW).

The Point of No Return is a fan zine + poster made entirely with my post-graduation depression energy.

Travels is an 8 page mini-zine containing 2 true stories of my time abroad.

And of course, QUICKIE issue 2, a collaborative zine featuring me and my tablemates as well as some lovely drawings by Christina Barrera. I will be selling these and a number of prints!

Herculean Woman

This is a painting I did as a commission, it's about 5' by 4' and was a lot of fun! Acrylic on canvas. I don't have a good shot of it yet, but here are some process shots.

The inspiration for the piece started with vintage comic covers like these.

Here's the tight sketch for the painting, and then the basic colors, laid in with photoshop. then I transcribed the image onto the canvas and started laying in basic colors.

And here are some shots of the finished painting! I loved putting in the details, it's like icing on the cake, it's the sweetest most indulgent bits that are worth all the build-up.

This was a fun project to work on, and I would love to continue doing large paintings like this occasionally. It was helpful to have a patron who backed the expenses! This was thanks to Mr. Andelman's support.

Here's something about Supernatural that I love: the fans, bored with obsessing over the actual show, created a spin-off universe featuring three great side characters who were starving for some development.

Ben Braeden is the son of Dean's girlfriend Lisa, and may or may not be Dean's son. Which means he might be the sole heir to the Winchester family business.

Claire Novak is the daughter of Jimmy Novak, whose body was sacrificed to become the angel Castiel's vessel. She also has the blood of a vessel, just like the Winchesters. And she probably has just as many daddy issues.

Jesse Turner is the son of a demon and a human, and was destined to become the Antichrist and help bring about the Apocalypse. Instead he ran off to Australia, and probably a lot of other places. I like to think he's just trying to find a place were he fits in.

I enjoy using Google SketchUp to build spaces and then populate them with drawings. For example, I made this image:

I've played with SketchUp a lot. It can build really detailed models, but for the purposes of drawing, I like to leave the models simple. It's also faster.

anyway, this was supposed to be part of the Death project, its a map of the universe, kind of. The Stream of Consciousness, The Living, Eden/Atlantis, Heaven and Hell. And Death and a swarm of souls in the center. a failed attempt, perhaps?

Supernatural on the CW

A graphic made 100% by me, inspired by Supernatural. I'm working on a few projects over the break, but also a lot of fannish stuff like this just for fun.

I had been thinking about this image for a while. The pendant is from Dean's necklace, which burns hot in the presence of God. Dean gives it to the angel Castiel, who hopes to find God and stop the Apocalypse. This plan of action, of course, amounts to nothing by the end, and the necklace and its power are forgotten. Was this all just a misdirect, or will the pendant and Castiel's role as the wildcard eventually come back to light?

I used PaintTool Sai for both of these, as well as the self portrait I did earlier. I love it, but I am looking forward to resuming use of photoshop.

Digital Self-Portrait

My first assignment for digital illustration.

Done in Paint Tool Sai, in about 2-1/2 hours. More of a study than a piece, because I haven't done any digital painting in a *long* time. Thought I'd play it safe for the first try...sat down with a sketch and a mirror and some desk lamps, and after a few botched attempts I remembered how to paint and here ya go. Some issues with shading and colors, but I'm okay with it.

Did I mention I really hate to paint? I studied painting for like five years and finally said goodbye to it for good in college. The real problem is that I love painting, I just can't do it. Which frustrates me to all hell. I have the technical skills, but none of the patience or instinct.

Space Jail is a collaborative comic made of awesome, bein' cranked out by MICA's Sequential Art Club. Aliens, repo men, sexy three-boobed octopus ladies, guns, and bushy beards. Gotta love it!

Second full Illustration

Done! Except for a world of nitpicking and tweeking, this piece is finished. I also want to add a white border around it, with more room at the bottom for a small quote from Alice in Wonderland.

This piece was inspired by reading quotes from Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, and I hope to count it towards my concepts II course. The concept here would be the illustration of a quote, but also of the context in which the quote was read--here, in a strange new world.

Sleeping Boys

Continuing with my series of portraits of boys sleeping on wood floors, here's a guy named Long who was nice enough to curl up for the reference photo. This drawing (its about as tall as me) and the other one are not 100% complete yet, I will be experimentally adding color abstract elements. I want to not only take them further than just plain drawings, but also give them a color pop-- something flat and simple, not overpowering, and not super specific.
The idea with the drawings (and the elements that will be added) has to do with personal reflections and tender moments of violence (?).

Here's a bad photo of a nice drawing I did today in class. The model is a guy who lives in my dorm at Takadanobaba. The floorboards are the same ones I draw every time I get a chance (refer to my freshman life drawing class). Ahh, it feels good to carve a drawing out of charcoal and Arches once again. I feel in my element when I'm working on something simple like this. I toootally forgot (or never fully realized) that vine charcoal makes everything look 10x as finished as it is.

I fell in love with top-buns and thigh-highs while living in Tokyo. At the same time, I'll always love curvy sun-bleached blondes on the beach. I miss home in other ways too. This is like...an erotic illustration about that.

I know, I know, I should draw the boys too. It's harder for me to imagine guys naked, and that really bugs me. Something to be said about male vs female fashion-- for the guys, I always notice how beautifully the clothes are layered on, and with girls I always notice the hints of skin and curves. So when linking fashion accessories to the body, it's easier for me to think of female accessories? What is wrong with this picture? Female body objectifying methinks?

For Tokyo guys, its all in the scarf and glasses. Maybe a watch? I ran into problems when I got to thinking about the feet. I don't like the idea of drawing socks on a naked body... doesn't really do it for me. But it seems unbalanced if I don't? I've noticed a lot of guys doing the jean-cutoffs-over-leggings thing. Can this please be a fad in America soon?? Also the blazer-over-knit-sweater look. And rolled up jeans over funny colored socks and punky boots. This is a unisex thing actually. I love it!!

For American guys though? To be quite honest I don't see much in American male style. Not commonly, at least. Suggestions please? Discuss?

Japan's got talent

A would like to pimp out some cool artists I had the pleasure of meeting a couple weeks ago at my gallery show at Design Festa Harajuku.

The first is a young woman from Korea, living in Japan. Her sketches are incredibly detailed and delicate. She captured some beautiful city life moments, and her fashion illustrations are very chic. Of the work I saw there, her small show was one of my favorites. Thank you (rara) for kindly talking with me.

I also talked at length (in two broken languages) with a very nice young woman named Mai Nakahira. Her illustrations were amazing, and I was very impressed by her storybooks! That she had created something so beautiful and professional by herself was truly amazing. Her style is fanciful and full of magic.

Her show (called "Monster's Cave") was a collaboration with friend and partner-in-crime Hariken, whose work is of a similar genre but with a more edgy style. The both of them were very nice, with a love of strange and silly drawings. Good luck to both of them!
Can I be just like Hariken and Mai when I grow up? Look how awesome they are.

In addition, I enjoyed a collaborative show called "1 2 3 4 5 6 7"

The artworks were by a group of artists. All the work was small and intricate. I loved looking carefully at each piece. (Click the images to see more pictures!)

Everyone was very nice to me. I was too nervous to really talk with everyone, also I because very aware of just how little Japanese I can speak. But nonetheless, it was very fun.

Work in Progress - Wonderland

For me, Tokyo is like a giant amusement park. Attractions, distractions, and intrigue wherever you turn, in every nook and cranny. Everything you need to live is right at your fingertips, and everything you could want is available if you know where to look. This place even shuts down at night, as if everyone living here is just a visitor and after midnight we all go back to our boring real life. Then it starts all over again. I could spend a lifetime exploring.

This drawing is about being Alice (Pizza Face), flying kites with schoolchildren, and the anticipation of spring.

Pogo

This guy is my current reason to illustrate. He creates these songs/videos using sound samples from films. The result is truly beautiful. Work like this is an example of what fandom can do for a piece--these films, enjoyable in their own right, are a degree more complete now, having been re-arranged. Like taking an old drawing, cutting it up, and taping the pieces back together, sometimes the act of deconstruction can open up the hidden potentials of something once thought a stagnant, unmoving piece in time.

On a related note, The Secret Garden is one of my all-time favorite flicks. If you look closely, you'll see that the whole world is a garden.

Haiti

For my first illustration of the semester, I decided to pour my heart into a piece for/about the Haiti Earthquake aftermath. I've been following the news as it comes out. One story that struck me was this short piece about an orphan girl. She's one of many--but how many? I shudder to think.

I eventually intend to add a few color washes to this in some places. But I haven't yet decided what colors to use. Suggestions?

This class is a throwback to middle school and high school. Except, I wish I'd been this good in middle and high school. Ha! Well, they aren't works of art, I definitely still have room for improvement. It's a good studio class for staying loose, if nothing else.

The Japanese Cell Phone Game

Trouble Shooters

For concepts, a re-design of an old video game cover. I chose Trouble Shooters, or Battle Mania in Japan, an old side-scrolling game. The original American re-design for the cover was just awful.

My hand letters didn't come out so well, and I think the poses are a little stiff. Oh, Haji in the background is a character from the game--the prince who the girls are trying to save. Awesome, right?

PIZZA FACE Project

PIZZA FACE IN KANJI LAND is the codename for the spring 2010 semester. It's going to be an adventure, and adventures need epic titles, so. I'm an egotist.

I've worked at an art summer camp over the summer for a past few years as a teacher/counselor. Featured in the article (linked) below are a few of the projects I did with my classes. The age group was 5 to 7 years olds, and we drew giant abstract murals, flowers, and spaceships! Jackson Polluck and Georgia O'Keefe, eat yor heart out.

Clone - Finished Cover

I finished my second commission/experiment with PaintTool Sai. I was lazy when it came to rendering the mirror, could have been better. But it has been a long, emotionally stressful week and I just wanted to be done with it. Overall, I'm happy with the outcome. And so was my client. :)

Gargantua Comic

For some reason I never posted this? Weird?
Oh but BTW this comic was part of the Gargantua publication made by Alain Corbel's sequential arts class and was sold at a comics convention in France. They were also displayed as part of a gallery featuring our school's comics! I am so excited about this.

Jackie - Finished!

I finished him! I also finished the secret project. One commission left! Oh, but right after I finished this one I got another commission. Fingers crossed on me making enough money for Japan! ><

I'm quite pleased with how it turned out. I tried very hard to make it look like something that might, in some strange universe, be passable as a real book cover. Hopefully my next piece won't be as painful. I started over a couple of times (partly because I was learning a new program, but really because I'm bad at digital painting). I did this entirely with PaintTool Sai, a program like PS--but free, lean and REALLY fun! My PS died on me, so. Yay open-source programming!

I am kind of bummed that I can't spend as much time on personal projects this summer...Between teaching and these jobs, I'm drained. :P

Oh shoot, what am I gonna do for Illustrated Book class? I need a story. I have a feeling the answer is right in front of me. I need to root through my old books. All of my favorites were those nineteenth-century classics with young heroines. Anne of Green Gables, Mary Lennox, Laura Ingalls. Maybe?

I've been working on a few different things this summer, including a secret project for a toy designer, which I can't post :( but other than that, I've got two illustrations going. Here are the sketches for them. I'll be inking and coloring each of them in a different way over the course of the summer. Hopefully I can finish them soon, I have some other projects I want to start!!

Also: working on getting the comics up online, and watching PR and Leverage.

Birthday Cards are Super Fun

This is the birthday card that I made for my friend *Andrea, whose birthday is coming up. She loves rainbows, stars, and flowers. I have a book of Charlie Chaplain stills, and a few bags full of scraps, stickers and doo-dads. The little bar by our kitchen (I don't have a desk at home) is covered with paint, glue, tape, scraps, etc., after a fun day working on this.
When I make birthday cards, I feel like I'm doing something worthwhile. I feel free. I hope she likes my card as much as I do. :)

Snow White done right

In this version of the story, "Snow" is fired from her corporate job thanks to her jealous co-worker, and gets a new job working in a diner run by an immigrant family. She comes to love her new job and new friends. But the jealous co-worker finds her, and reports the family as illegal immigrants. At the immigration office, a defence attourney appears to save them. He turns out to be one of the diner's regular customers. Snow, the family, and their attourney return happily to their diner, to live in peace.

Another Mail Room short. Kat is a seasoned mail room worker, she knows all the ins and outs and has her own suspicions about how so much gets done in such a small office. Some of the employees may or may not have supernatural powers. Kat is a smoker. Rachel thinks everything is cool.

Mailroom comics

You might have noticed the weird new blog banner. What is it, you ask? It's me, wearing an eye-mask with cartoon eyes. Hello! I'm wearing the jacket worn by my cartoon counterpart Rachel in Mailroom, a comic I'm working on for thesis. Rachel loves to eat, draw silly pictures, and deliver mail. She's kind of a dope.

I did two comics called Mailroom last year, which can be read here. This semester I'll hopefully be drawing lots more Mailroom comics! Wish me luck.

This is a quick cover I threw together for SPX. The character on the cover is Kat, the no-nonsense leader of the student workers. She smokes, swears, and is skeptical that the mail room is haunted.
