Main Street Blues

Here is a piece I did for the NY Times! You can read the article and view the full-size animated gif here. It was really fun to be asked to make 2 versions of this piece--one for print and an animated version for the website! I used Google Street View to look at the actual street mentioned in the article, and directly referenced a lot of architectural and street details. Thanks AD Erich Nagler for this assignment!!

Yubitstume - Battles Without Honor and Humanity poster sale!

This is my piece for the Portland art show Battles Without Honor And Humanity, organized by Sloane Leong. The theme was the Yakuza cult-film genre that included the movie series with the show's title. It was such an honor to be in this show with some of my favorite illustrators. (All the show's pieces are for sale as 11x17 prints, each only $10!! But the sale ends tonight...) You can see them all here!

Funny Face: Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire, and Kay Thompson

I rather feel like expressing myself now, and I could certainly use a release!

I've been on an old-Hollywood-musicals kick since last week and one movie I keep coming back to is Funny Face with Audrey Hepburn, Fred Astaire and Kay Thompson (the lady who wrote the Eloise books). It's so romantic and silly and these three are FABULOUS. Two good sequences are Audrey's bohemian ballet solo and Fred and Kay's beatnik dance routine (including fake goatee and beret). You can see the clips I used as reference below.

Fixie Bikes and Giant Robots

I am considering the alternate titles "Rebecca Draws Things That Make No Sense For No Reason" or "Rebecca Has Too Much Time On Her Hands". That's also going on my business cards.


This is a sort of concept/experiment for a hypothetical story about a girl who rides a fixed-gear bike and gets mixed up with a giant robot (??). I was thinking about what it would be like to see something monumental from a far distance in the dark, the line between a hallucination and objects obscured by atmospheric perspective. I am a big fan of The Iron Giant and FLCL, and "bike porn"--sexy pictures of sweet custom bikes, sexy girl optional. I'm also a fan of wearing a helmet when biking!
